What is the Food Bank?
Community Action Agency;s Food Bank Program is the region's
primary provider od USDA commodities and donted foodfor populations
in need and for agencies that serve the needy. The Food Bank is a private,
non-profit organization that collects whole nutritious foods and distributes
them to people who might otherwise go hungry.
How does the Food Bank work?
The Food Bank provides low cost food to local food
pantries and soup kitchens that serve the hungry. The Food Bank
is able to buy food at a lower cost through bulk purchases, and
distributing food from America's Second Harvest program.
What services does the Food Bank provide?
The Food Bank is made up of the following four components...
The Commodity Supplemental Food Program
This program serves pregnant women and children under 6 years of age
(who are not registered in a WIC program) and senior citizens age 60 and
older. Distributon dates vary among sites.
Distribution sites include: Las Cruces, Del Cerro, Chapparral, Sunlad Park, Anthony, Hatch,
Radium Springs, Deming, Columbus, Lordsburg, Santa Clara, Silver City,
Alomogordo, T or C, Carrizozo, Mescalero, & Tularosa.
The Emergency Assistance Food Program (TEFAP)
The TEFAP program serves low-income families and individuals throughout
southwestern New Mexico. The CAA Food Bank provides Emergency Food Organizations
such as pantries, soup kitchens, and churches, with commodity foods that are
then made available to their communities, based on qualifications. The
TEFAP Program is available in the following counties: DoŇa Ana, Hidalgo ,Luna, Otero, and Sierra
The CAA Food Bank Emeergency Food Box Program
The Emergency Food Box program provides one-time assistance to hungry families
and homeless individuals in DoŇa Ana County. Food boxes must be requested and picked up
by a case manager or client advocate. Available food may also vary and you must first meet
with a Family Resource Coordinator to begin the qualification process.
Second Harvest
The Second Harvest Program allows the CAA Food Bank to make a variety of foods available to
Emergency Food Organization, pantries, soup kitchens, shelters, and non-profit organizations who
provide food to those in need.
Second Harvest products are sold to these organzations at aminimal cost that can be
as low as .18 per pound. To benefit from this program, agencies must be a "member agency"
of Community Action Agency Food Bank.
How can I qualify for Food Bank programs?
elegebility varies among the programs. In order to begin the application process, you
must have the following items present at time of enrollment.
CSFP
- Photo ID
- SSI Award Letter
- Proof of additional income if applicable
- Proof of address (utility bill or letter varifying address if no bills are in your name)
- Proof of Pregnancy
- Birth Certificates for children under 6 for first time enrollment
TFAP
- Self declaration of income for entire household
- Proof of address (utility bill or letter varifying address if no bills are in your name)
- Photo ID
